9am Briefing: Gun rampage fears for school after pupil's online threat

A TEENAGE boy sparked fears of a school rampage after claiming online that he was going to shoot bullies at George Watson's College, it was reported today.

The 14-year-old is reported to have said on an internet suicide support chatroom that he would take four bullets to school the next day to shoot three bullies and himself. Members of the forum contacted police, who searched his home for guns early yesterday. However, he insisted he was not serious about the threats and police took no further action.

• THREE suspected burglars have been caught as they fled from an alleged house breaking – because they crashed into a police car.

The alleged raid, which took place in the Murrayfield area of the city early yesterday, saw three men scared off by the homeowner, who woke up when he heard someone in his house, called the police, and ran downstairs to challenge them.

The men then allegedly jumped into their stolen getaway car, only to drive straight into a police car which was racing to respond to the 999 call.

Three men, aged 18, 19 and 20, were set to appear in court this morning.

• KILLER Luke Mitchell has pleaded to be moved to a new prison for his own safety, it was reported today.

Mitchell, who was jailed for at least 20 years for the murder of 14-year-old Jodi Jones in Dalkeith in 2003, reported sick five times in one day and is said to be in fear of his life in Shotts Prison.

• A CAMPAIGN to win compensation for thousands of Lloyds TSB shareholders is gaining momentum, with lawyers saying they are "very confident" of success. Around 100 people involved in the Lloyds Action Now claim met last night to discuss their claim, which is based on the fact that Lloyds failed to disclose the full state of HBOS's finances when it asked them to vote on the takeover. Organisers say they hope to recruit "thousands" of private investors to the campaign.
