9am Briefing: First Asian Knight of the Order of the Thistle to be installed

THE first Asian to be made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle will be formally installed today.

Lord Patel of Dunkeld, a retired consultant obstetrician and academic who has been a leading figure in his field, will meet the Queen during a ceremony at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Supreme Court deputy president Lord Hope of Craighead will also be installed today as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle.

The Order of the Thistle is the highest honour in Scotland and is second only in precedence in the UK to the Order of the Garter.

Museum scraps children's activities due to travellers camp

AN East Lothian museum has been forced to abandon its summer activities for children after travellers set up camp on its grounds.

Prestongrange museum in Prestonpans has cancelled its holiday programme ranging from story telling to family activity days after seven caravans set up camp on July 5.

East Lothian Council has since taken legal action to evict the travellers, and has warned that their presence has blocked access to the visitors' centre and raised safety concerns.

School in running for green award

EDINBURGH'S Tynecastle High School is in line for a top award for its green energy system.

Heating and hot water for the school's new campus, which opened in January, are provided by surplus heat piped from the nearby North British Distillery.

Now the school has been nominated in this year's Green Energy Awards, run in association with Scottish Power, which take place in September.
