9am Briefing: Fire wrecks shop days after robbery

FIRE wrecked a shop in Granton this morning just days after it was ransacked by a gang of thieves.

The fire broke out at Sandy's convenience store in Granton Mains Avenue, just after 4am.

A woman who works in the shop and lives nearby spotted the flames and called the emergency services.

• TWO pupils at one of Edinburgh's leading independent schools are at the centre of a police investigation into an alleged sexual offence involving a 14-year-old girl, it was reported today.

The boys, both 16, and the girl are all pupils at George Watson's College.

They are alleged to have taken part in a drink-fuelled incident in the grounds of Napier University's Craighouse campus and filmed it on mobile phones.

It is claimed all three were willing participants, but the two boys could face sex charges because the girl was under 16.

Police have since interviewed the pupils and their parents over the Hogmanay incident.

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating an alleged sexual offence."

• TRAINS between Edinburgh and Fife, Perth and Aberdeen were disrupted after thieves cut through a 650-volt cable to steal the copper.
