9am briefing: Essential Edinburgh boss stands down

THE head of a company set up to improve Edinburgh's city centre has revealed she is to stand down amid criticism of its performance.

Jane Wood said she will resign from her post as chair of Essential Edinburgh next week to pursue other business interests.

The organisation has been criticised for failing to provide any proper return in exchange for the levies paid by businesses within the area between Princes Street and George street.

Luke Mitchell's mother sued over caravan death

THE mother of killer Luke Mitchell is being sued for 250,000 over the death of a man from carbon monoxide poisoning in a caravan.

Corinne Mitchell ran Scott's Caravans in Dalkeith in partnership with her mother when it sold a second-hand caravan with a gas heater which allegedly had not been properly installed.

John McCafferty, 56, and his wife, Gwenneth, stayed in the caravan and were both poisoned. Mr McCafferty died, and his widow has taken a compensation case to the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Boy "knocked to ground" following football match

AN eight-year-old boy was knocked to the ground and his father allegedly attacked as they left a football match in the Capital.

The boy and his father were walking to a Rangers fans' bus after the game against Hibs at Easter Road on Wednesday.

James Cruickshank, of Sauchie Clackmananshire, was reportedly attacked and his son Aidan suffered a bad bruise to his forehead after being knocked to the ground.
