9am Briefing: Capital set for two new hotels

TWO new hotels are to open in the Capital under expansion plans by the world's biggest hotel chain.

InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) is to also open a hotel in Glasgow.

A 59-bedroom Hotel Indigo will open next Autumn in the Georgian townhouses on Edinburgh's York Place, currently home to the Osbourne Hotel.

In another major boost to the city, the group will also develop the Shrubhill bus depot site with a 121-apartment long-stay hotel for business travellers under the Staybridge Suites chain, due to open in Autumn 2012.

• MORE than 2,500 banned items were seized from prisoners behind bars last year - including syringes and blades.

The highest number of seizures was at the city's Saughton prison, where 843 items were found.

The Scottish Prison Service revealed that mobile phones, alcohol, pornography and games consoles were also confiscated by guards at prisons across the country.

In total, warders found 331 weapons between August 2009 and August this year.

• TV presenter Gail Porter has pulled out of 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!' and is being replaced by a Playboy model.

Show sources reportedly said Edinburgh-born Gail pulled out late last night "without giving much of a reason".

She has been replaced by American Kayla Collins, 23, also known as Dollface, who was Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month in August 2008.
