A crew from RNLI at South Queensferry, set out to help the man - the namesake of Robinson Crusoe author Daniel Defoe - and his female partner on Tuesday afternoon after they became stranded at Cramond Island.

A spokesman for Forth coastguard said: "We received the call at 3.10pm when we were told that a man and his female partner had been cut off by the tide at Cramond Island.
