Licence dispute could close cafe

ORGANISERS of award-winning Fringe venue The Forest Cafe say it could be bankrupt by September because of a dispute over its alcohol licence, it is reported.

The venue in Bristo Place has been granted only a week-to-week late licence by the city council, which organisers say threatens its future.

The venue, which operates year round as an open arts venue and volunteer-run cafe, offers an eclectic programme of Fringe events including a travelling MP3 sound library and a "ping pong quiz show".

Airport faces shut-down

TALKS are set to take place in a last-ditch bid to avert a crippling airport strike.

Staff at Edinburgh Airport are among those set to join the nationwide walkout in protest at a "derisory" one per cent pay offer.

The earliest a strike could be called would be Monday, August 23 – throwing holiday plans into chaos and potentially hitting the Edinburgh festivals.

However, union leaders said there was still time for BAA to "get round the table and negotiate" and that it would "not take much" to sort out the dispute.
