9am Briefing: Army's Scottish HQ to be closed

The Army's HQ in Scotland, Craigiehall, is to be closed under the Government's defence spending review. Craigiehall, near Cramond, is the base of the only General's post in Scotland, which will also be lost.

• A pensioner has left 2 million to charity in her will. Joan Nimmo-Smith of North Berwick East Lothian, named 13 charities as beneficiaries in her will when she died in April aged 96. Her brother in law, Andrew Nimmo-Smith, of Selkirk, left 250,000 to his cats when he died last year, as well as bequeathing 18th century Haining House to the community.

• JK Rowling has won the first Hans Christian Andersen literature prize, created to be awarded to someone who can be compared with the Danish writer. The 60,000 award was presented yesterday at a ceremony in Andersen's home town of Odense, Denmark.

• A leading Scottish law firm with an office in the Capital is to axe legal staff. McGrigors, which employs 800 people across the UK, is to cut about 40 staff in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.
