81 convicted for cannabis possession

MORE than 80 people were convicted of possessing cannabis after being caught by Lothian and Borders Police last year - but only one person was jailed for the offence.

New figures showed that 81 individuals were convicted in the force area between last April and March, with 63 receiving fines for possessing the Class B drug and 13 being admonished.

One person was placed on a drug treatment testing order following conviction while two were put on probation and another one was given community service.

The number of convictions rose against the previous year, which totalled 60, while 77 were convicted of cannabis possession in 2006/7.

The figures were released by Fergus Ewing MSP, minister for community safety, in an answer to a parliamentary question by Lothians Tory MSP Gavin Brown.
