From innocent fires to vengeful acts of arson and to blazes set as acts of war, here we look at the Scottish places that were forced to rise from the ashes once again.
5. Dunning, Perthshire, January 1716.
This thorn tree commemorates the victims of the Jacobite fires that left villagers homeless during a severe winter storm. What a doleful prospect it was to see the whole village in a moment put in flame," one account said.
6. Strathnaver, Sutherland, 1814
The "year of the burning" marks the beginning of Highland Clearances in Sutherland. One account details around "250 houses in flames at once" as tenant's homes were set on fire. The blaze lasted six days.
7. Dunbar, East Lothian, 1548
Dunbar was one of the many towns in the Edinburgh area burnt down during the Rough Wooing, when Henry VIII ordered his men to "put all to fire and sword." Tranent, Mussellburgh, Leith and parts of Edinburgh were also attacked.
