600 new jobs are in the bag when Primark's store opens

BUDGET clothing giant Primark plans to give jobs to hundreds of people who have been dumped on Edinburgh's unemployment scrap heap.

• Hundreds of positions are to be created when the new 30 million Primark store opens its doors on Princes Street

It emerged today that 600 jobs will be created by the 30 million development of the new Primark store on Princes Street. And the company has asked the city council to help recruit the staff it needs for its new flagship store by recommending some of the long-term unemployed people it is helping to get back into work.

It will prove a major boost to the council's attempts to get 3000 "disadvantaged" people back into work, training or education by 2012.

Initial discussions have already taken place with Primark about the job vacancies and the council will now help to train people who find it difficult to get a job, before recommending them to Primark when it is recruiting the staff.

It is part of a new approach by council chiefs, who want to try to build closer links with new companies moving into the city.

Councillor Tom Buchanan, the city's economic development leader, said: "Our 'employability and skills' team have already made contact with Primark with a view to making the most of what is already a fantastic boost for the city.

"As is the case with any large employer coming to the city, we will work closely with our Joined Up For Jobs partners to assist in the company's recruitment and selection process - be that through the promotion of vacancies via our communication networks or in the creation and delivery of bespoke training programmes for potential candidates. It's a win-win as we can help Primark to enjoy a softer landing into the city while, at the same time, creating valuable job opportunities for the people who need them most."

Under the scheme, council staff will help "screen" candidates for the role by drawing up a shortlist for the jobs.

Those who have no retail experience could be recommended for training at the city's retail skills academy.

Council staff may also be able to set up other training classes for jobseekers, such as improving their job application skills. And they can also arrange placements for those seeking work. Training is already provided through "partner" agencies like Jobcentre Plus and the local colleges.

The council's employability and skills team, within the economic development department, has helped 749 "disadvantaged" people into sustainable employment, education or training since April 2009. To meet its targets, it will need to help another 2251 by April 2012.A spokeswoman for Essential Edinburgh said: "It is not just fantastic news that Primark is coming to the city but also that they are creating so many jobs and working with the city council to address long-term unemployment."
