60% would 'fail driving test'

SIX out 10 Scots motorists believe they would fail if they had to take their driving test tomorrow, according to a new survey.

Three-quarters confessed they had not read the Highway Code since gaining their licence and a fifth said they frequently break it.

The most common traffic offence admitted by Scottish drivers was speeding in a 30 mph area (34 per cent), while 9 per cent said it was failing to indicate and 7 per cent parking on double yellow lines. One in 20 singled out using a mobile phone while driving and 5 per cent said their biggest fault was jumping red lights.

Despite the findings, 58 per cent of Scots rated their driving as "good" with 19 per cent saying it was "excellent".

Matthew Mycock, managing director of Autoglass, said: "There appears to be a serious road safety deficit among Scottish motorists and UK motorists in general."
