55 firefighters tackle Glasgow primary school fire

City firefighters are tackling a blaze at a private primary school in Glasgow.

Glasgow Steiner Primary and Infant School evacuated after fire broke out this morning

Glasgow Steiner Primary and Infant School in Lumsden Street, in the Yorkhill area of the city, was evacuated when the fire broke out at 11.30am.

A total of 55 firefighters are at the scene using 10 appliances from Yorkhill and nearby Maryhill, as well as from Polmadie station on the southside.

The fire was in a first-floor classroom and was well developed by the time crews arrived, and is now spreading to the roof.

Incident commander Lewis Ramsay said: “Members of the local community can be assured that fire crews will continue to work relentlessly until this incident is brought to a safe conclusion. An effective multi-agency approach with police and the local authority is ongoing to manage the incident and reassure local residents.”

Roads around the area have been closed.

Firefighters and police are investigating the cause of the blaze.
