400 years of keeping eye on capital

An ORGANISATION that was established in the 17th century to keep order on the streets of Scotland's capital is celebrating its 400th anniversary.

The Society of High Constables of Edinburgh was originally set up on the orders of King James VI of Scotland's Privy Council, which required the city of Edinburgh to appoint constables to keep the King's peace.

The group, which says it was probably the world's first statutory organised police force, used fines or force to keep the 15,000 strong population under control. Now, its duties are ceremonial and charitable, with members of the 21st century team accompanying successive lord provosts to key events.

The society unveiled a commemorative plaque to the High Constables yesterday at the Edinburgh City Chambers.

The society's most senior constable, moderator Raymond Pia, said: "With 400 years behind us, we look forward to playing our part in celebrating the great civic occasions of the future."

When carrying out duties, members wear top hats, morning dress and regalia, and carry ornate silver batons.
