30 treated for hypothermia

MORE than 30 people were admitted to hospital in the Lothians last year suffering the effects of hypothermia.

The figures, released through the Scottish Parliament, represent a rise on previous years.

In total 33 people were admitted, a small increase in the previous year, but almost double that from the 12 months before.

It was also the second highest in Scotland, behind Glasgow.

Experts cited the freezing conditions the last two winters have brought.

It is understood around 15 people last year had hypothermia listed as one reason on their death certificate.

Others said the statistics pointed to a high number of people struggling to afford to heat their houses because of fuel poverty.
