Coastguard team rescues 28-year-old woman who plunged down a cliff on the Isle of Lewis

A 28-year-old woman was found suffering from hypothermia early on Tuesday morning after falling down a cliff at Bragar Cemetery on the Isle of Lewis.

The casualty was rescued after teams got the call at around 3.30am on Tuesday.

She was saved after Stornoway Coastguard Rescue Team were called at 3.24am on Tuesday, February, 16, to reports of a person over a cliff on the Isle of Lewis.

A statement from HM Coastguard Western Isles, Skye and Lochaber said that Derek and Kayleigh Smith, father and daughter team from the Ness Coastguards, reached the casualty first and assisted her from the water.

As they discovered the woman in a hypothermic condition, the team worked to warm her up while continuing to assess her overall condition.

In order to recover the casualty from the base of the cliff, the volunteers secured the woman onto a stretcher while other team members set up a Rope Rescue system on the cliff above.

Teams from Bragar, Ness, Breasclete and Miavaig were in attendance, along with Police Scotland and Duty Officer S18D.

Due to uneven and slippery rock ground, it was too dangerous to try to move the individual on foot.

The statement said: "Once secured in the stretcher and recovered to the top of the cliff, the casualty was handed over to the care of Scottish Ambulance Service for onward care at

Western Isles Hospital.

“We wish her a speedy recovery and want to remind everyone to take extra care at cliff edges in wet and slippery conditions."

The current condition of the casualty is not known.

Police Scotland have been contacted for a comment on the incident.
