1900s German postcards offer odd vision of future

THIS postcard, created by a leading German chocolate manufacturer in 1900, offers a warped and wacky vision of the world 100 years on.

Made by the Theodore Hildebrand and Son chocolate firm to depict what life might be like in the year 2000, the firm produced a collection of 12 bizarre postcards, showing a weather machine, underwater boats, roofed cities and even personal flying machines.

Although one suspects having a roof over the town would make personal flying machines somewhat redundant.

The drawings on the postcards were based on predictions made in 1900 as to how the world would look 100 years into the future.

Warped though they are, it’s likely the postcards were actually a crafty marketing campaign from Hildebrand and Son.
