100 retired cops coining it in on civvy street

NEARLY 100 retired officers have returned to Lothian and Borders Police in civilian staff roles, new figures have shown.

A total of 94 retired officers are currently employed as police staff after retiring from front-line duties.

The retired officers work in posts including emergency call handlers, warrants officers, clerical assistants, court liaison officers and CCTV review officers.

Other staff members work in areas such as emergency planning, co-ordinating the monitoring of sex offenders under the Mappa scheme, and child protection.

The highest paid among the ex-officers earns up to £43,650 while the total pay bill for the 94 posts is £2.2 million a year.

A former chief superintendent is the highest ranked among the police staff.
