Great days out in the beautiful Scottish Borders: Summer holiday ideas for places, attractions and what’s on

If you enjoy trips to museums and galleries, and a diverse range of exhibitions and attractions then head to the Scottish Borders this summer for a great day out or a mini-break this summer.
We take a wee trip down to the Borders to discover what’s there to see and do.

The Jim Clark Motorsport Museum, Borders Textile Towerhouse, Old Gala House and many more gems across the Borders offer the prefect day trip or overnight adventure. Over thirty exhibitions offer a unique glimpse into the rich culture of the region, with a wealth of history and art to absorb and lots for the kids to enjoy.
Sporting past
One of the standout exhibitions currently on display is the Hawick Rugby Football Club: 150 Exhibition running until Saturday, November 30 at Hawick Museum. It tells the compelling story of a group of young men who, in 1873, established a rugby club that would become one of the most consistently successful in the world. Visitors can enjoy a nostalgic and perhaps emotional journey through the displays, sharing in the pride of the Greens’ success on the pitch.

Artistic greats
Another must-see exhibition is "Gillies: Modernism and Nation," which explores the works of the influential Scottish artist, Sir William Gillies running until Sunday, October 20. Visitors can expect to see a range of his paintings, sketches, and personal artifacts that highlight his innovative approach to modernism and his profound connection to Scotland.
Iconic name
The Lyle and Scott 150 Exhibition is another highlight, celebrating the rich history of the iconic Scottish knitwear brand. This exhibition showcases the evolution of Lyle and Scott, from its humble beginnings in Hawick in 1874 to its status as a global fashion brand. Visitors will be treated to a display of vintage garments, advertising materials, and photographs that chronicle the brand's journey over the past 150 years.

Family fun
In addition to exhibitions, Live Borders Museums offers amazing displays and family events in the Summer of Play.
From motorsport enthusiasts drawn to the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum with a racing simulator which celebrates the legacy of the legendary racing driver, to textile connoisseurs exploring the rich history of the Borders' textile industry at the Borders Textile Towerhouse, or perhaps an eye-opening trip back in time at Jedburgh Castle Jail – a great one for the youngsters – there is something for all the family.
