A number of the family's most famous names used the property, including legendary World War 1 veteran Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig.

Built in the 1860s, the mansion had previously been used a five-star luxury Bed and Breakfast, which new owners could re-establish with every one of the eight bedrooms en-suite.

The castle-style property has a number of features beyond its luxury living quarters, including a home cinema room and a wine cellar.

Among the older features are a morning room and large bay windows throughout to enhance natural light.

The luxury property is near to St Andrew's, making it a potential dream retreat for visitors to the Home of Golf.

It is marketed by Savills, with the steep price tag of offers over £1.75m.

Considering the price of even modest accommodation in city centres, however, those of significant means might reason that country life is still worth the money.
