Budget or boutique?

Prestonfield House is a five-star destination hotel, known for glamour, decadence and luxury.

Room service

In Prestonfield’s 23 luxurious bedrooms and suites expect warm, rich colours, statement antiques and tactile fabrics. The rooms are furnished to a very high standard with mosaic-lined en-suite bathrooms, desks with comfortable seating and dining areas with adjustable lighting for a relaxing ambience.

All rooms have expansive views over Prestonfield’s gardens and parkland, either over the iconic Arthur’s Seat, the adjacent golf course and Royal Holyrood Park, or over the impressive historic ruins of Craigmillar Castle. Some rooms feature views in two directions. All accommodation is fully air-conditioned and features bespoke media cabinets with Bluetooth TVs and a minibar stacked with treats.

Wining and dining

Enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner in one of the most memorable settings in the city. The destination restaurant, Rhubarb, (so named as the estate was one of the first in Scotland to propagate the vegetable in the 18th century) offers inspiring dining from daylight to twilight. The restaurant, occupying grand Regency rooms, delivers all of the gourmet delights, magic, drama and romance you would expect from the creator of the Witchery by the Castle.

Enjoy exceptional cuisine with Scottish produce, locally sourced from small, artisan suppliers. The current menu includes classic sharing dishes for two, such as a Chateaubriand of Angus beef or Tweeddale Scotch lamb, or perhaps try fresh hake from Scrabster and East Neuk crab.

You can also enjoy one of the city’s most distinguished afternoon teas, a Prestonfield tradition and memorable whether served by the fireside throughout the winter, or in summer in the rose-filled gardens or whimsical gothic tea house. A selection of leaf teas, including Prestonfield’s own blends, are available, as well as home baking, savouries, scones with homemade raspberry jam and traditional sandwiches.

Worth getting out of bed for

Some very distinct wildlife is on display, with Prestonfield’s majestic peacocks parading on the front lawn and around the gardens, adding that extra air of opulence to the whole experience.

A short walk away is Craigmillar Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots, convalesced in 1566 after the birth of the future James VI, during which time the pact known as the “Craigmillar Bond” was made to dispose of her husband, Lord Darnley.
