Gleneagles named top UK hotel in luxury travel bible
Gleneagles is named the top UK hotel and ten Scottish hotels are winners in this year’s Condé Nast Traveler’s 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards as Edinburgh is also voted top UK city to visit.
Readers of the luxury loving travellers bible have rated Gleneagles top hotel in the rest of the UK outside London, and nine other Scottish hotels in their top 30, three of them in the capital which they also voted best city in the UK.
The Scottish hotels that made the list of the top 30 places to stay are The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, close behind Gleneagles at number three, Links House Dornoch number six, Inverlochy Castle Hotel, Fort William, at 13, Glencoe House at Invercoe at 14, The Fife Arms Braemar at 18, The Balmoral, Edinburgh at 21, The Torridon at Achnasheen at 23, Trump Macleod House and Lodge, Balmedie at 25 and The Scotsman Hotel Edinburgh at number 27.
More than 715,000 Condé Nast Traveler readers across the globe voted in the award in a year when travel is more complicated, both for international travellers and those closer to home.
It’s the tried and tested classics and newcomers with something extra that are coming through with visitors as the places to stay; those that linger in the memory from pre-lockdown days and make a staycation stick in the mind.
Since 1924 Gleneagles in the heart of Perthshire has been one of Scotland’s most iconic hotels and sporting estates and along with the other hotels on the list, is holding its own in the luxury travel market. With 850 acres to enjoy beyond its 205 bedrooms and 28 luxury suites, as well as a championship golf course, the resort is a hit with those keen to take a break within social distancing guidelines.
Following the Scottish Government’s announcements and phased exit from lockdown, the resort reopened on 15 July with AA Covid Confident accreditation and is welcoming guests back.
Gleneagles announced they were “thrilled” to be named Best UK Hotel in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2020. “It’s been a year like no other, and we’re grateful to have had the chance to deliver outstanding experiences for our guests.”
Putting Edinburgh in the number one city to visit spot are the city’s central hotels, including The Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, which features Grazing by Mark Greenaway restaurant and the UK's only Guerlain Spa, The Balmoral with its Michelin starred restaurant on Princes Street and iconic landmark The Scotsman.
Under new owner Ennismore, Gleneagles features some of the UK’s most acclaimed designers – including David Collins Studio, Timorous Beasties, Macaulay Sinclair, Goddard Littlefair and Ennismore’s own in-house design studio – to create designs and spaces that celebrate the heritage and architecture of the hotel.
