Forth Road Bridge closed after explosives found

The Forth Road Bridge and its approaches were shut until 6pm today after an explosives alert.

A controlled explosion was carried out, during which the adjacent rail bridge was also shut, with train services suspended.

Traffic cameras showed long queues building up on the A90 northbound, south of the Forth Road Bridge, while police directed southbound vehicles off the M90 at Rosyth in Fife.

Brian Blessed ‘delivered baby in London park’

Actor Brian Blessed delivered a baby for a woman in a park, he revealed yesterday.

The larger-than-life actor and adventurer, 78, stunned listeners on national radio with graphic details of the birth and how he bit the umbilical cord and licked the infant’s face before calling for help.

“I rushed across to her,” he told a stunned Libby Purves, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Midweek programme. “She’d got her legs open… she knew me in Z Cars, I said ‘breathe deeply’ and gradually I got the baby out, the head,” he added.

David Cameron brands Jeremy Corbyn a ‘terrorist sympathiser’

David Cameron launched his first personal attack on new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn branding him a terrorist sympathiser who hates Britain as he used his conference speech to move the Tories to the left and take control of the centre ground.

Addressing the Tory party conference, he said: “My friends – we cannot let that man inflict his security-threatening, terrorist-sympathising, Britain-hating ideology on the country we love.”

The Prime Minister also made clear that there would be no second independence referendum.

“I love every part of our country. England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland – we are one nation and I will defend our Union with everything I have got,” he said.

Great British Bake Off final winner to be unveiled tonight

The winner of this year’s Great British Bake Off is set to be crowned. Nadiya Jamir Hussain, Ian Cumming and Tamal Ray have seen off nine other contestants to make it through to the final round of the sixth series of the show. Nadiya has been consistently strong throughout, earning the title of Star Baker three times.

The stay-at-home mum, 30, from Leeds, has impressed judges with her attention to detail and mastery of flavours, attracting praise for her chocolate peacock showstopper, and her fizzy pop cheesecake which featured a levitating can of pop. The Great British Bake Off final airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.

Scotland prepare to face Poland in crucial qualifier

Ikechi Anya will be missing from the Scotland side to face Poland tomorrow, having been ruled out with a calf injury. Scotland are already without the injured Charlie Mulgrew and the suspended James Morrison for a game Gordon Strachan’s side cannot afford to lose. Meanwhile, debate on Twitter centred on the central striker berth, with some calling for Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths to start, while others suggested Everton’s Steven Naismith should get the nod. Scotland lie in fourth place, six points behind Poland in Group D.
