Scottish political leaders support World AIDS Day

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie and Green co-convener Patrick Harvie have united to promote solidarity with people living with HIV, in the hope of shattering social stigmas and improving detection. The group put their political differences aside and stood outside Holyrood wearing red ribbons to mark the 27th annual World Aids Day.

Scottish Cup matches drawn

Hearts will host Aberdeen at Tynecastle in the fourth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup. The two sides are currently battling it out near the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership with only a point separating second placed Aberdeen from their Edinburgh hosts.

Elsewhere, Hearts’ local rivals Hibs will travel to Raith Rovers and Celtic will play away against Stranraer for their tie, while Rangers will host either Arbroath or Cowdenbeath. Current cup holders Inverness CT will start the defence of their crown when they travel to either Stirling Albion or Cumbernauld.

Edinburgh’s Christmas Street of Light switched on

A spectacular new light show installed in the heart of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile for the festive season was unveiled today. More than 60,000 lights feature in the new attraction, which is expected to bring around a quarter of a million people to the High Street section of the thoroughfare over the next month.

Whether you love or hate her, you can’t deny Margaret Thatcher left a lasting impression on the nation. The survey of 2,000 respondents - conducted by Opinium on behalf of Scottish Widows - considered the women who have had the greatest influence across politics and world affairs, journalism and broadcasting, and science and technology. In the UK-wide poll Mrs Thatcher beat the Queen to be named as the most influential woman of all time.
