Recommended restaurant: Taste Good, Slateford Road

AT first glance, Taste Good on Slateford Road does not look too remarkable. Walking down the stairs to the
restaurant next to the takeaway to a small, dark room you’d be forgiven for not expecting too much.

However, the service from the outset was impeccable. Swiftly seated, we were offered drinks – a Tiger Beer and a Tsingtao and prawn crackers (£2.70). The menu is what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant with a few new ones for me – smoked shredded chicken and steamed halibut with black beans and chilli.

Sharing the spring rolls to start (£4.10), the presumed difference
between the meat and vegetarian rolls are a few miniscule prawns. Other than that they were bursting with vegetables encased in pleasingly crispy pastry.

Next we shared sizzling beef steak Cantonese style (£9.70), chicken with garlic sauce (£7.60) and egg fried rice (£2.70). The beef was deliciously tender and the sauce very tasty and authentic, according to my friend. The chicken too was succulent and breakable with chopsticks. I would have preferred if it had not been battered but the sauce was garlicky without being overpowering. Finally, the rice was light and fluffy, interspersed with spring onions. As a whole it was too much to finish but it was happily given to us to take home.

Whilst the service was excellent and the food generally very good, the amount of oil used could have been less. Nevertheless, it’s a great place if you fancy a quality Chinese meal away from the sometimes overwhelming hustle and bustle of the Festival.
