Interiors: ‘We are ready again to inject energy and contrast’

THE citrus hues, which were hot colours for a couple of years, have been introduced this year in a slightly more muted form. Still vibrant, nevertheless they pack less of a punch and reflect our growing appreciation of global influences.

Touches of lively colours can work well as accents – although they can result in optical overload if used too generously.

1950s Modernism, probably as a reaction to the sombre war years, first saw a significant use of citrus in interior design and, after a decade of muted creams and whites, we are ready again to inject energy and contrast to our living environment. According to the psychology of colour, different hues have both cultural and emotional significances which carry subliminal meanings. And colour not only has psychological consequences, it is also believed to affect physiological states such as blood pressure and heart rate. Orange, for example, increases oxygen supply to the brain and stimulates mental activity. Given that all citrus colours tend to be similarly highly stimulating, care is needed when using them.

It is said that fewer than 15 per cent of people can visualise a colour scheme – the reason, perhaps, why neutrals, from the unthreatening end of the spectrum, prove so popular. If you do decide to inject some life into your decoration, it is a good idea to gradually introduce your chosen vibrant colour as accessories.

While they may sit uneasily alongside traditional period décor, clear citrus colours can work with almost any other colour scheme or style. As a rule of thumb, try either vibrant shades of an existing scheme or its opposite on the colour wheel. The secret of success is to be bold – but in small doses.
