As well as looking fabulous and feeling fitter and healthier, the 22-year-old is enjoying life to the full.
Research shows that overweight teenagers and young people are likely to continue to struggle with their weight as adults and develop weight-related conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
So Aisha’s weight loss and healthy lifestyle isn’t just great for her health now but for her future wellbeing too.
Life was very different for Aisha just five months ago. She was unhappy with her size, her self-confidence was at rock bottom and she felt like the odd one out among her friends. Then in February she joined her local Slimming World group at The Carswell Centre, Montgomery Street, Eaglesham which is run by Lesley Clark, and began her transformation.
She said: “I was so unhappy with my weight and was really nervous the first time I went to the group. I felt embarrassed and thought everyone would judge me for being overweight at such a young age.
“I couldn’t have been more wrong though, everyone was really friendly and made me feel welcome. I’ve made lots of friends – of all ages – so I love going to group and seeing everyone every week now.”
Aisha began following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on healthy foods and make small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that make a big difference to their waistline, like swapping white bread for wholemeal or fast food burgers and chips for homemade ones.
Aisha continued: “The eating plan was very different from what I’d expected. I thought losing weight meant not eating very much or cutting out all of your favourite foods but it wasn’t like that.
“Thanks to talking to other members in group and sharing ideas, I’ve learned a lot about food and can cook quite a lot recipes for myself from scratch now so I’m not reliant on microwave ready meals or junk food anymore.”
Aisha has blossomed since dropping 1st to 8lbs and she no longer feels like ‘the odd one out’.
She said: “I love being able to wear the same clothes as my friends and enjoy going out with them more now I’ve lost weight. I’ve got so much more energy, I walk everywhere. I used to feel self-conscious about doing anything physical like that in public but I don’t anymore – I’m just like everyone else!”
Lesley Clark who runs the group, said: “Everyone in the Eaglesham group is so proud of Aisha. She’s a huge inspiration. She’s learned healthy habits that will stay with her for life so worrying about her weight is definitely a thing of the past. Obesity in young people is such a huge problem and it affects how they feel about themselves as well as their physical health.
Everyone is welcome at the Eaglesham Slimming World group every Tuesday at 7:30pm and young people aged 11-15 can attend for free when they’re accompanied by a parent or guardian and have the approval of their GP.
