Harbour Island is a picturesque retreat made up of nine acres of rugged coastline with wild gardens and woodland which attract a spectacular array of wildlife and seabirds.

And hidden in the middle of the island is a 1,000 sq/ft unmodernised cottage with three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, living room and conservatory.

There is also a wooden outbuilding with guest room and shower room, a boathouse and slipway.

The private island is located off Crinan Harbour, which is a 100 mile trip to the west of Glasgow, Scotland.

It forms the sea end of the Crinan Canal, which was opened in 1801 and stretches from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan on the Sound of Jura, and provides a shortcut from the Firth of Clyde to the Western Isles.

The island has now been put on the market with Savills for just £500,000 - which gets you a tiny studio in central London or a three-bedroom terrace in an upmarket part of Bristol.

Andrew Perratt, head of Savills Residential in Scotland, said: “Crinan Harbour is a really well known landmark as it is where the canal meets the sea.

“The canal was built by the Victorians as a shortcut and it cut trips by a day. It is next to the main harbour and is famous island because it is where people shelter.

“In the past it was used by Glasgow puffer boats but these days it is more likely tourists in their yachts.

“It is a blank canvas for whoever buys it and I think it is a particularly good island because it is quite close to the mainland so you don’t need to take a long boat trip.

“The island went on sale today (Tues) and the phones have already been ringing.

“We are expecting international interest from the likes of American and the Far East from buyers looking for a holiday home.

“In my experience people who buy island are normally very busy people and it gives them a quiet retreat for weekends and holidays or retirement.

“What makes it attractive is its accessibility and the value - £500,000 doesn’t get you much these days in London.”

Savills was recently marketing the island of Rudh-A-Chruidh, off the north east tip of Kerrera on Scotland’s west coast.

The island, which has just gone under offer, was almost twice the price of Harbour Island and with half the land.
