IT IS an idyllic island farmhouse, nestled in a 61 acre estate with its own 1.5km stretch of private shoreline.

But now, Vestness – located on the southern point on Papa Westray, the smallest of the inhabited islands of the Orkneys – is for sale at around the same price as a small flat in Edinburgh.

The property, which also boasts numerous outbuildings and uninterrupted, panoramic sea views, is on the market for offers in the region of £200,000 – just pipping the average £194,643 cost of a typical two-bedroom property in the capital.

Joanne Stennett, of selling agent Bell Ingram in Inverness, said: “Vestness offers a truly unique opportunity for anyone keen for a lifestyle overhaul and looking to reap the benefits of peaceful, rural living. Although it is in need of renovation, the property has endless potential as the four barns could be converted into holiday cottages, or it could be developed for conservation and wildlife.”

She added: “This is the only house on the southern point of Papay and the views across the sea and to the islands beyond are simply unbeatable. For those looking for undisturbed island life, this property is truly the ideal remote getaway.”

The property is on the island of Papa Westray, which is a two minute flight away from its nearest neighbour, Westray – making it the world’s shortest scheduled flight.

Last month, a spoof tourist brochure was produced, advertising a fake Scottish island, “Mama Westray”, which claimed it was close to Papa Westray and was home to fish-eating pigs and was a regular haunt of actress Cate Blanchett.
