Discover the luxury rental apartments at Glasgow’s new and exciting neighbourhood

Tucked away behind what is now the north-east corner of George Square in Glasgow stood a cobbled lane entitled Love Loan, which was home to an assortment of businesses ranging from cane makers, glass and paper merchants, shopkeepers and coal dealers during the early 19th Century.

Today Love Loan is a new and exciting neighbourhood in the heart of the city, featuring a large hotel, private members' club, bars, and a collection of 12 serviced luxury apartments for rent by DJ Alexander.

The estate and lettings agent is celebrating that it has now secured tenancies for 11 of those properties.

As part of the development, which has been described as a “new day-to-evening destination”, the building at 280 George Street has been completely redesigned by Glasgow-based Hoskins Architects to create contemporary high-end flats for modern-day living.

There are a range of one-bedroom to five-bedroom apartments at the B-listed property, which was recently bought by family-run property firm Mactaggart & Mickel Group (Mac Mic Group) for £4.25 million and once housed the HM Revenue and Customs tax office.

Conor McNulty, New Business Director at Edinburgh-headquartered estate and lettings agent DJ Alexander, said: “The redevelopment was carried out sympathetic to the original character of the building, with high skirting boards, detailed architraves and ornate cornicing.

“All of the apartments benefit from sleek kitchens with integrated appliances, open-plan kitchen and living areas, high ceilings, and huge windows with many of the apartments enjoying views over George Square and onto Glasgow City Chambers.”

Prices start at £1,400 per calendar month for a one-bedroom apartment and range up to around £2,500pcm for a five-bedroom, which have so far drawn interest from professionals and students from across the UK and the world.

Flat 2/1 is a typical three-bedroom furnished home priced at £2,600 and is generously proportioned and well-lit thanks to its open-plan kitchen and living area with dual-aspect windows.

The stylish kitchen boasts fully-integrated appliances and a large island with built-in hob, and is the ideal space for entertaining in.

While the impressive exterior architecture and interior remodelling is sure to impress, the location is second to none.

“George Square is at the very heart of Glasgow's city centre and this development is situated on the north-east corner,” explains McNulty.

“Glasgow Queen Street train station is approximately 200 yards from the building and some of the city’s finest shopping, bars, restaurants and cafes are within touching distance on Buchanan Street and the Merchant City.

“Furthermore, 280 George Street is virtually next door to the University of Strathclyde's campus and Glasgow Caledonian University is just half a mile away.”

Once complete, Love Loan will also be home to a 245-bedroom AC Hotel by Marriott, Soho House with the private members' club, darts venue Flight Club, plus many more brands which are to be announced.

The development is being delivered by real estate investment firm the Chris Stewart Group, who acquired the site in 2017, and more than £648,000 of funding from the City Centre Strategy budget was allocated to it by Glasgow City Council.

Andrew Mickel, Mac Mic Group director said: “We are delighted to see this ambitious and transformative new development come to life at Love Loan. This new neighbourhood being delivered by Chris Stewart Group will revitalise this part of the city centre.

“Hoskins Architects reimagined the spaces within 280 George Street, and specialist fit-out contractor Thomson Johnstone carried out refurbishment works to create 12 exceptional apartments that offer a new level of luxury modern living in Glasgow.

“High corniced ceilings create bright and airy living, dining, and sleeping spaces with contemporary furnishings and finishes for a modern-traditional look.

“Tenants of 280 George Street will enjoy a new hospitality and social scene on their doorstep at Love Loan, as well as access to a wide variety of the city's finest shopping, entertainment, bars, restaurants, and cafes.

“Our long-standing lettings agent, DJ Alexander, has already secured tenants for 11 of the 12 apartments, underscoring the high demand for these properties.”

In terms of what service DJ Alexander can offer its tenants, Conor McNulty adds: “Our aim is to maintain the integrity of this exceptional development and through this, ensure that the tenants are comfortable and secure in their homes.

“We have also established a close working relationship with the factor with the intention of not only safeguarding the quality of the apartments internally, but also the building as a whole.”
