At the foot of the Union Canal, but just a stone's throw from Lothian Road sits Cargo, a trusty docking bay for apres work urbanites in search of the ideal spot to wind down and enjoy a nice cool lager. It's large, heated patio looks directly on to the canal, making a great place to while away the hours watching ducks weaving among the barges and the odd rocket-fuelled kayaker slicing their way along the water. It's also perfect for these long midsummer nights, being one of the few places in town to keep its patio open past 9pm.

It is advisable to get there early on a Friday night, as it tends to get busy with people winding down after a week of work. At quieter times it has a much more laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, being one of those places that has become a popular destination for urban bar lovers with great views of the re-generated industrial docks.

Visit this bar to make the most of the late summer evenings by going out on the patio, watch the water's ebb and have a long summer night lock out, if you will.

When "the Chief puts sunshine on Leith", to echo the words of the Proclaimers, it's a moment to cherish and few places are as well served to celebrate it in than Cruz bar and restaurant. Moored on the Shore, once you've walked the plank and stepped on board you see that this is no place for crusty old sea dogs. Circular crme leather booths face the top-lit bar and besides the portholes and the big, shiny wheel in front of the DJ booth, there's little to remind you that you're at sea. There are DJs and club nights most weekends, free Salsa evenings on Thursdays and an Open Decks night, where bedroom beatmasters can take a turn at the wheel.

The first floor is given over to a brightly decked out Italian restaurant but the boat's prime spot is its roomy top deck where drinkers can sit out, shoot the breeze and peer imperiously down at patrons from the Shore's busy strip of adjacent watering holes. You don't even need to take your weary sea legs downstairs too often, since there's a bar up top.
