A trip to get the messages with your granny or granda as a kid always meant you had the opportunity to cajole them into partaking in a visit to the local sweetie shop.

On approach you were greeted by a proverbial riot of coloured gems, and that was just from the shop window. When you got inside the jars spread out before you like a crazed alchemist’s dream.

Sadly you were only allowed to pester the ‘wee man behind the counter’ for one type – or two, if you were particular skilled at manipulating your relatives.

Soor plooms, cola cubes, lemon sherbets, penny toffees… probably the most important choice a 6 or 7 year old would have to make that week. Later, the opening of that little paper bag to reveal whatever your chosen treasure happened to be was the best part of the day.
