Celebrate Songkran (April 13) with a takeaway from one of Glasgow and Edinburgh's best Thai restaurants

From massaman curry to pad Thai, here’s where to get your Songkran takeaway

The Thai New Year festival of Songkran is on April 13. We’re celebrating with a takeaway (or a post April 26 booking) at one of these Edinburgh and Glasgow restaurants.

Mentions must also be made of Edinburgh favourites, Bluerapa and Thai Lemongrass, and Glasgow’s Thai Siam. Sawasdee pee mai (when it comes).

This classy joint has been open since 2002. They’re currently open for takeaway and delivery, with a menu that includes seau rong hai, which translates as tiger cry, since the “bird’s eye chillies in the sauce are hot enough to bring tears to the tiger’s eyes”. Gulp.

We’re big fans of both of Edinburgh’s Ting Thai Caravans, with one at Teviot Place and another on Lothian Road. They were always reliable for a punchy eat in buzzy surroundings, back in the olden sociable days. They’ve been offering takeaway through lockdown, so we can still enjoy their lovely massaman ped curry with confit duck. It’s hard to just get a main course, since the sides, like the yam sam krob (crispy prawns, squid, cap moo) are so good.

From Wednesday to Sunday, this place is offering takeaway or delivery, if you order on their site, and they’ll be reopening for sit-in diners on April 28. We recommend their signature angel curry, with a char grilled sirloin steak, red curry sauce and crispy potatoes.

During lockdown, this place launched a second branch at 5a Johnston Terrace. We look forward to trying it post pandemic, as we love the Stockbridge branch at 8 Gloucester Street. In normal times, we hope they still do their £10.95 for two courses lunch menu, with the pad kra prao beef. For now, you can get that dish and many others for takeaway and delivery.

GLASGOW

They’ve just opened their bookings for April 26 at this aptly named restaurant, which has been closed for lockdown. They offer steamed Scottish mussels with a Thai twist (a coconut or red curry sauce) as well as the mysterious “rock ‘n’ roll” - aka spring rolls with glass noodles, cabbage and carrot. Maybe Bobby Gillepsie ordered them.

This is not a Thai restaurant, but “influenced by the flavours of Southeast Asia”. Dishes include a green curry of chicken, banana chilli and krachai (Chinese ginger) or palm sugar sticky toffee pudding. They’ve paused while their chef works on fried chicken takeover, Koxedo, but will reopen on April 26.

We’ll have to wait to christen this new place’s green leather banquettes. The Thai dishes on their Southeast Asian menu include smoked bone marrow and brisket massaman curry or pad Thai of crab claws and king prawn. They’re currently doing takeaway, including a One Night in Bangkok box with four courses and a cocktail for £70.
