Celebrate International Waffle Day (March 25) with Biscoff or lobster topped waffles from these Scottish businesses

It’s only a few sleeps until International Waffle Day.

You can take your waffle machine out of the cupboard for its decennial outing, or get takeaway from one of the below.

We’ve also heard that the waffles and ice-cream from Linlithgow’s Champany Inn are excellent, if you’ve got space after one of their mega steaks. The Cocoa Tree Cafe in Pittenweem, re-opening on April 26, offers waffles with their own chocolate, and Flahute Coffee are currently doing a loaded waffle pop-up in St Andrews.

Delightfully Delicious

This place, specialising in waffles, shakes and coffee, recently opened in the former premises of Marchmont’s Saiko Kitchen. They do sweet or savoury options, including Lotus biscuit and banana; an apple crumble bubble waffle, or buttermilk fried chicken with honey butter and maple syrup. Available to click and collect through their website or delivery through Ubereats.

McLarens on the Corner

There are many variations on the waffle, from the stroopwafel to Vietnamese pandan waffles. This place is doing the very zeitgeisty bubble waffle, which is popular in Hong Kong, and features spheres that give it a pleasing bubblewrap-esque texture. You’ll find them at their outside Scranavan, to takeaway, with toppings including Bailey’s cheesecake, Smores and brownie, lobster, or buffalo chicken.

Ness Walk Kiosk

Keeping Inverness sugar-fuelled, this kiosk serves coffee, cakes and sandwiches, as well as trays of waffles that look as if they’re more than a foot long. These are dunked in melted chocolate, and teamed with ice-cream, marshmallows and all manner of sweetness. Follow them on Instagram.

Buck’s Bar

We recently gave this place a mention for its fried chicken. We’ve now heard they also do American style savoury waffles teamed with the aforementioned fried chicken. Unfortunately, they’re not on the takeaway menu, so wait for reopening to give them a whirl. Glasgow’s Absurd Bird (3 Nelson Mandela Place, www.absurdbird.com) also offers this salty combination, currently available for delivery or takeaway.

Get your “muckle waffles” here, currently available to takeaway. If you can’t do big, they’ll also do dinky “wee waffles”, with a choice of topping - maple syrup, golden syrup or ice-cream. Perfect for traditionalists who aren’t impressed by bubbles or Biscoff.

Cafe Rhubarb

Try this corner cafe, re-opening April 26, for waffles smothered in sugary toppings, like banoffee, Nutella and banana, apple and cinnamon, maple syrup, ice-cream and mixed berries with cream. They do gluten and dairy free options too. If waffles don’t float your boat, there are other traditional tearoom goodies, like custard slices and empire biscuits.

Pittenweem Cocoa Tree chocolate waffles

Plant Bae

Formerly Grams, this venue offers vegan waffles, which are crisp and taste a bit like banana bread. Choose from versions including the Bis-coff it down, which comes with a hypodermic of caramel sauce, blueberries, syrup and a peanut butter ganache. Sadly, it’s temporarily closed, so you’ll have to port those cravings for a while, though their sister venue, Grams ( 68 Hamilton Place, www.gramsedinburgh.com), is open for waffle takeaway.
