Five unusual ways to fundraise for charity in Scotland

WITH a new charity event seeming to take place every week, it can be hard to grab people's attention and persuade them to part with their cash.

Feeling under pressure to raise money for a good cause can put more stress on the situation, and take any fun out of it.

Sometimes it’s because you don’t want to be “that guy” - you know the one you’d cross the street to avoid?

Date night auction

Host an event and allow bidders to compete for an amazing date night.

Ask local cinemas, bowling allys, restaurants and bars to donate to the cause, and sell them off to the highest bidder.

You could even round up some single (willing) friends, and bid off dates with them. It would bring in a more diverse crowd, so your audience won’t just be filled with couples - and you’ve the potential to entice more people.

Adult spelling bee

Are you smarter than...everyone else?

Get people to team up in groups of four and prepare to battle it out. Each team should be given a white board and 30 seconds to answer with the correct spelling of a word. Any team who gets it wrong is eliminated.

Having participants work in a group will ensure that no one person is singled out, meaning more people are likely to join in. If there are a large number of groups, you can split the competition into rounds, eliminating the lowest scoring team after five questions.

To raise money, you can charge an entrance fee to each group, or ask them to find sponsors who will donate a certain amount for each word they get right.

Charging a smaller admission to the audience and selling refreshments will also help boost your profit.

Couples dance marathon

The aim of the game is simple - the last two people on the dance floor wins.

Have all partners pay an entry fee and offer a prize to the winners. Couples must keep moving, or be sent off the dance floor. The event ends when there is only one pair left standing.

Make it into a fun event with a theme night, such as 1920s, or superheroes.

Remember, you’ll have to offer them a ten minute break every few hours to run to the toilet or grab a quick drink!

Penny war

This is a good inter-office fundraiser. The office is split up into teams and each are given a clear jar. The goal is to have more pennies in your jar than any other team. The team with the most pennies wins a prize.

The fun part comes in the sabotage. The other teams can try and sabotage your jar by adding coins which are not pennies, or notes to the jar. These count negatively towards the total score. So if your team has 100 pennies, but someone manages to get 20p into it, your final score would be 80.

A competitive edge in group members will help raise the final totals.

Bad dress day

Another one that can be held in the office, and would work great with a theme.

Make everyone dress in 80s or 90s clothing, and donate a pound to charity. For those that don’t partake, fine them £3. The funds will soon add up and it will also lift the mood of the office.

You can even round it out by playing a few of the classics from that era over the lunch break.
