Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs which ranks breeds by instincts, obedience, and the ability to adapt.
Some of the most adorable dogs are also the naughtiest, being more likely to steal food, chew on the furniture, dig up your flowerbeds, run away, or get up to some other hijinx.
Here are the 12 naughtiest breeds of dog.

5. Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is the UK's most popular breed of dog but, as anybody who has ever owned one will know, they also have the potential to be the naughtiest. It's difficult to stay angry at them for long though, because they are adorable and always seem very sorry...before they do it again. | AFP via Getty Images

6. Jack Russell Terrier
A well-entertained Jack Russell Terrier who receives plenty of exercise and entertainment will be the perfect companion. Leave one alone for too long though and it will get bored - with every chance that it will go into full-on destruction mode. Nothing will be safe. | AFP via Getty Images

7. Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkies may be tiny, but they possess huge personalities. Their stubbornness, territorial barking, jealousy, and fearless confrontations with larger animals often surprise owners expecting quiet, delicate lapdogs instead at home. | Getty Images

8. Border Collie
Border Collies are so full of energy and intelligence that if they don't get enough stimulation they'll make their own entertainment - often in ways that their owners don't fully approve of. Basically, if they behave badly - it's your fault. | AFP via Getty Images
