Dogs come in all shapes and sizes - the UK Kennel Club recognises 221 different pedigree dogs, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).
Then there are all manner of crossbreeds, from so-called ‘designer dogs’ to lovable mongrels.
Each has its own list of positive and negative attributes, and it’s important to take plenty of time to think about what breed will fit into your lifestyle the best - for instance a smaller dog if you live in a flat, or a hypoallergenic dog if the mere mention of dog hair makes you think about sneezing.
There is even scientific research to guide you, in particular psychologist Stanley Coren’s groundbreaking book The Intelligence of Dogs.
Many dogs need lots of exercise, with several walks a day an absolute must to keep them healthy and happy.
But others are quite happy to stay at home, cuddled up in front of the fire, so are perfect for people who are less mobile, or less than keen on visiting the park come rain or shine.
Here are 12 of the laziest breeds of dog.

10. Great Dane
Great Danes are as lazy as they are huge. A quick trot around the block and they'll be ready to lie on a rug for a few hours. | AFP via Getty Images

11. Pekingese
Originally bred for royalty, Pekingese dogs enjoy luxury and relaxation. They dislike strenuous activity, preferring to lounge comfortably and move only when necessary, maintaining their dignified, laid-back demeanor at all times. | Getty Images

12. Pug
Compared to the other dogs on this list, the Pug is actually quite lively. Because of their tiny size though, by the time they've reached the front door they'll already be exhausted. | AFP via Getty Images
