A new study has revealed the vocal cues that pet dogs are most likely to respond to - with ‘treats’ topping the list.
The research by pet insurance specialists Animal Friends Pet Insurance analysed TikTok videos created as part of the ‘dog’s favourite words’ trend - where owners ‘hide’ words in sentences to see if their dogs will still respond to them. The results are often hilarious.
Whilst it’s clear to see from the trend that dogs have the ability to respond to certain cues, it’s not as straightforward as them understanding what we’re saying and the specific meaning behind the word(s).
Catrin George, animal wellbeing specialist at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, explained: “There are a number of factors that come into play when talking about a dog’s recognition and understanding, with many debating the extent of their abilities.
“One explanation could be that they have associated the word with a particular action over a period of time, for example, hearing the word walk whilst their owner is picking up their lead. Or, it could be that they’re responding to the tone and pitch in which the word was spoken, as well as the speaker’s body language whilst saying it.
“The most important thing is that each dog is different, and ultimately, owners should be encouraged to find their own way of connecting and communicating with their pet in a positive way.”
