Choosing to get a dog is a huge decision to make, and one that more of us than ever before have taken in recent year – around one-in-three UK households now contain at least one four-legged friend.
While some are seeking a new puppy, other big-hearted potential dog owners are happy to adopt a pet that is looking for a new forever home after perhaps not having the best start in life.
The Dogs Trust are dedicated to matching up dogs in need of a home with their perfect owner, and their centre at West Calder, near Edinburgh, currently has a wide selection of pooches.
To see if you’re a potential match, just fill in an application form here with all your details and let the Dogs Tust match you up with a suitable pet.
They’ll then look at how closely your lifestyle matches the needs of the dog and, if you’re a great fit for your selected animal, they’ll invite you to meet your prospective up.
They may also organise a home check to make sure it’s suitable for your new family member.
You can also pop into the rehoming centre before submitting the application to see the dogs beforehand.
Here are 12 of the dogs currently looking for a home.

5. Tess
Tess the 7-year-old Border Collie is a very special dog who needs a very special home. She is amazing, affectionate, fun loving and water daft. Tess has lived in a loving home all of her life and loves to be around people. She is cuddly and adores playing with all sorts of toys. She has the very busy mind of a collie and does need to have something to do to keep her busy mind active. This would be easier if Tess was not frightened of things outside, in particular certain loud noises but most of all the sight and sound of any vehicle. Living at the rehoming centre she has become more comfortable with this but at first in a new environment would need her own quiet garden with no noises in the immediate surrounds and definitely no vehicle sounds nearby. She would be ideal to roam a large garden and would love to have water to play in as this is her most favourite thing in the universe. But beware - she does get muddy. | Dogs Trust

8. Malcolm
Malcolm is a lovely 7-year-old Chihuahua cross Pug. He is a sweet boy who absolutely loves to be around his people. He will happily be your little shadow and sit on your lap for a gentle fuss. He can live with children aged 12-year-old and above, is fully housetrained and is looking for a home with no other pets. Malcolm can sometimes be shouty at other dogs and would prefer to walk in quiet places where he is unlikely to bump into other dogs. He is happy to be left for a few hours, but would like someone at home with him most of the time. He is looking for his own garden where he can run around and roll about in the grass.
