Fiat brings time-sensitive smart charging to 500 EV with new partnership

Fiat has announced a new partnership which it says will help owners of the all-electric 500 save money on charging and reduce their environmental impact.

Fiat’s parent group, FCA, has signed a deal with intelligent energy platform Kaluza to test the company’s cloud-based smart charging platform in the UK, rolling it out to select Fiat 500 EV owners.

The direct-to-car technology uses live information from the energy grid to determine low-demand and low carbon-intensity periods when energy is cheapest. It can then set cars to charge at this time, reducing the cost and carbon footprint of charging. As the system is cloud controlled and linked to the car’s onboard software, there is no need for a separate smart charger.

The scheme will be offered to a select group of UK 500 EV owners early next year as part of an initial trial. Fiat says it should offer drivers “reduced bills, lower carbon emissions and a seamless in-app charging experience oriented around their individual needs”.

Roberto Di Stefano, head of e-Mobility at FCA, commented: “The agreement with Kaluza to explore smart charging technologies represents an excellent opportunity to reduce vehicles’ charging costs and subsequently the total cost of ownership. Furthermore, this innovation will allow our Fiat 500 EV customers to experience the benefits without the need to install specific charging equipment.”

Sara Wood, CEO at Kaluza added: “Collaboration between the transport and energy sectors will be crucial for the UK to reach net-zero emissions. We are excited to be working with FCA, a company that combines a unique automotive history with an ambitious vision for the future of e-Mobility. Together, we are putting a truly innovative technology in the hands of drivers, allowing them to unlock the full value of their electric vehicle and become active participants in a decarbonised energy future.”
