The landmark B-listed red-brick building, located on the city’s south side, is the former headquarters of Scottish Power and now provides a mix of one, two and three bedroom flats, and two-bedroom penthouses.

However, just a handful of three-bed apartments are now left, as buyers across the country eagerly snap up three-bed homes in response to a desire for more space and more flexible working arrangements created by Covid-19.

The building was designed by Scottish architect, Sir John James Burnet, and built by the Wallace Scott Tailoring Institute. It was completed in 1916, however plans to further extend the building began in 1919 and lasted until 1922.

For a long time known as the headquarters of Scottish Power after it was bought by the company in the 1950s, property developer FM Group acquired the building in 2017 and has been extensively refurbishing it through a £40m redevelopment plan.

As a listed building, Cathcart House retains its original hallway entrance and its marble staircase with decorative balustrades and prices for three-bedroom apartments range from £335,000 to £341,000.

Robert Croll, sales manager at FM Group, said: “The convenient extra space within our three-bedroom apartments provides the homeowner with ample opportunity to tailor their home to their exact needs.

“The third room is now seen as a space to be used to enhance lifestyle, whether that be in the form of a home office to address more flexible working arrangements, a gym, yoga studio, games room or even a dressing room.

“Cathcart House is situated in an ideal location, being close to the city centre and yet surrounded by green areas, providing the perfect backdrop for home workers and commuters alike. With just a small number of apartments left, these qualities are a clear attraction for buyers.”

According to property site Zoopla, three and four-bedroom homes have recorded the biggest annual drop in supply, hitting a five-year low, reflecting buyer demand for more space.

With most people working from home over the past year, having space for a dedicated home office separate from other living areas has been crucial to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, but has also seen demand skyrocket. This is a trend that is set to continue with flexible home-working arrangements continuing for many, at least part of the time, post-pandemic.
