Street photographer Robert Blomfield's unique urban portraits showcase post-war Edinburgh

He was the former Edinburgh medical student whose incredible collection of street photographs remained virtually unknown for almost 50 years.

The late Dr Robert Blomfield spent a decade from 1956-66 living in the Scottish capital, privately amassing a fine collection of candid urban portraits during his time there.

Unknown to the wider world, Dr Blomfield’s incredible photographs were digitised in 2011 as part of a joint effort with his family to reveal them to the public.

Around 60 of these photographs were exhibited for the very first time at the City Art Centre two years ago, and accompanied by a book and documentary.

To mark the passing of Dr Blomfield on December 14, we have, with the permission of his publishers, gathered together a selection of his finest Edinburgh photographs, showing the city and its people in the post-war era.
