The vision for the new-look sports centre is now moving closer to fruition after plans were unveiled to help pay for the funding shortfall.

It will cost £42 million to achieve, but there has long been an appetite in the city to restore the stadium to its former glory.

In its heyday Meadowbank was a fantastic facility, hosting the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and then again in 1986.

Over the years it has played host to some of the most elite athletes of the time.

In July 1985, Steve Ovett was one of the runners taking part in the men’s one-mile race during the Dairy Crest Games.

Following the Commonwealth Games in 1986, many of the competitors donned fancy dress for the informal closing ceremony at the stadium, which was packed out with spectators.

Meadowbank has also become home to a number of charity events over the years.

Some of the Round Table team were photographed at the rope as the Evening News charity walk got under way at Meadowbank in September 1987.

And the venue has also had its place providing a stage for popular bands over the decades.
