Nostalgia: ‘The saluting box is a privileged place to be’

As a resident of Corstorphine, Mrs Hannan has always loved the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle and feels privileged to have been a guest of several people who have taken the salute over the years.

She said: “My husband and I have been in the saluting box at four different Tattoos as my husband has previously served in the army.

“I remember being in the box years ago when the person being saluted was a senior Naval Officer.

“It was great to be a part of that and I was very happy at not just being able to go to the event but being able to stand in the saluting box among the other guests.”

Mrs Hannan has always felt privileged to be a guest of many people taking the salute but last years celebration, the 2012 Edinburgh Military Tattoo, was a particularly special one.

“We were in the box last year serving as guests of the Lord Provost of the City of  Edinburgh.

“It had been a long time since we had been at the Tattoo so I was glad to feel that great sense of occasion again.

“I thought that last year’s performers were the best I had ever seen at the Tattoo.

“Some of the performers were from my son’s former school so it was great to see them again.

“The facilities were also great at last year’s event which meant that I was well protected for all elements of the Scottish weather.”

Despite having been a number of times already, Mrs Hannan would welcome the opportunity to be a guest of the person taking the salute in the future.
