Nostalgia: Period pieces

TWO city ladies enjoyed a taste of Victorian elegance when they modelled a range of valuable period
costumes, as we revealed on this day in 1992.

Sales clerks Suzanne Watt and Kathryn Johnstone tried out the gowns that were going under the hammer at Edinburgh auctioneer Phillips. The two-piece silk taffeta dress was expected to fetch up to £300 with the velvet gown valued at around £200.

The dresses were just some of the lots available at the auction held two decades ago.

Bids were also made for items of clothing, textiles and dolls from the Victorian era.
