Nostalgia: Love thy neighbour

THERE were some raised eyebrows amongst residents in a Niddrie housing scheme when their new neighbours were revealed – as four nuns.

The holy women, from a 400-strong religious order, had moved into a council flat with the aim of becoming part of community life in the area.

Sisters Emmanuel, Frances, Vincent and Margaret were part of London-based order the Poor Servants of the Mother of God. They had all taken vows of poverty,
chastity and obedience.

One of the nuns, Sister Emmanuel, told the Evening News on this day in 1993: “We are very happy here
already. The people have been very nice to us and we have had no problems at all.

“We felt there were a lot of good things going on here and, by living here, we can be a support to individuals and groups and help out wherever we can.”
