Nostalgia: From this week in the past

A DEEP freeze had left animals and birds at Edinburgh Zoo with long faces – despite their thick fur coats and downy waistcoats – on this day in 1982.

The Evening News told how the Arctic winter had come as a surprise even to animals used to cold climates. The penguins were tramping the snow and ice, waiting for feeding time, and had learned a new trick – shivering.

The polar bears were exploring the ice in their enclosure, sometimes with freezing cold results.

A young female grey seal was still swimming in her pool, but the surface of the water was frozen over, except for three holes. Three adult squirrel monkeys huddled together for warmth – and their home was centrally heated.
