TO calorie-counters, this little creation consisting of three litres of ice cream, butter icing and sweets was anything but a delight.

But it certainly brought a smile to the face of its maker – Lawrence Boni, owner of Mr Boni’s ice cream parlour at Tollcross – when he showed off his Mickey Mouse ice cream cake in the Evening News 30 years ago today.

The cake gave him second place and a certificate of merit in the artistic class in the Ice Cream Alliance national championships.

He said: “The cake takes a long time to make as you can only do a little at a time before putting it away to freeze again.”
