Volunteers wanted to help discover the health benefits of cabbages

SCOTTISH researchers are seeking volunteers to discover which compounds in cabbages could help in the fight to prevent diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Experts from Aberdeen University’s Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health are looking for up to a dozen volunteers to take part in a groundbreaking study into the health benefits of different varieties of brassicas from red and white cabbage to kale.

Dr Wendy Russell, who is leading the study at the world renowned research centre, explained: “There is already clear evidence that cabbages have health benefits.

“But we are trying to answer very specific and fundamental questions because there are a lot of questions that are still unanswered.

“We are trying to find out which compounds are responsible and when, people eat cabbages, where these compounds go in the body and what they are changed into in the body.

“It will help support the evidence that already exists that these vegetables are protective.”
