School chiefs will consider pill guidance

THE city’s education chief has refused to rule out the possibility of the morning-after pill becoming available in Edinburgh’s schools.

The influential Scottish Sexual Health Lead Clinicians Group has argued that emergency contraception and condoms should be given out by school nurses in a bid to drive down teen pregnancy rates.

MSPs on the Government’s health committee are set to consider the 
proposals.

City education leader Paul Godzik said that Edinburgh Council would consider any proposals made by the committee.

He said: “We look forward to the Scottish Parliament’s health committee publishing its report. It’s obviously for them to weigh up the evidence.

“We will look closely at the recommendations made and will work closely with the Scottish Government and our health partners to reduce teen pregnancies in Edinburgh.”

Latest available figures show around two girls under the age of 16 fall pregnant every week in the Lothians.
